What Are the Causes of Heart Disease?

Posted by admin | Health | Sunday 18 July 2010 4:45 pm

Millions of Americans suffer from it, but what really are the causes of heart disease? There is almost as many myths and misinformation about the causes of heart disease as there are actual causes. Everything from fatty foods, to high cholesterol, to lack of exercise is included in the list of causes of heart disease, but what truly belongs there? A Realistic Look At The Causes Of Heart DiseaseThe first thing to understand is the coronary heart disease is not one singular disease, but rather a combination of factors that results in a possibly deadly condition that can result in cardiac arrest. While diet and exercise do play a huge role in the disease, this role may not be nearly as prominent as doctors and scientists over the last 30 years or so have lead us to believe. One of the leading and most dangerous causes of heart disease is damage to the heart muscle or a congenital defect. Damage can be caused by a viral, bacterial, fungal, rickettsial or parasitic disease. These dangerous disease can cause a serious weakening of the heart muscle which eventually leads to heart disease.

Each of these high risk factors for heart disease are caused by situations not related to exercise or diet. That is not to say that diet and exercise are not important to cardiac health, but blaming all causes of heart disease on those factors alone is grossly incorrect.

There are literally dozens of risk factors for heart disease. The most commonly cited ones are high blood cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, stress, and being overweight. Of these the strongest link between to a direct cause is smoking. The other causes of heart disease do have significant bearing, but none as strong as smoking. While many may say that most smokers will exhibit the other qualities in addition to smoking, if you look at the raw data and factor out the additional causes smoking still carries the strongest correlation to heart disease. Another huge factor in heart disease is stress. Doctors have noted that heart attacks strike in the months after severe emotion trauma. Highlighted condition include death, bankruptcy, layoff, and relationship failure. In each of these situations the risk of cardiac arrest is significantly increased. While diet is important there are other factors that will effect the likelihood of developing heart disease. It is best to try eliminate or mitigate as many of the factors as you can to avoid being a high risk candidate for a heart attack.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) – One Form Of Heart Disease

Coronary Artery Disease is the most common example of what heart disease is. It is the leading cause of heart attacks. This is caused by hardened and narrowed arteries, which makes the heart have to work much harder to move the blood around the body.

Coronary Artery Disease can also lead to other things, like angina. Angina is the chest pain or squeezing feeling that many people experience as a sign of heart attack. Usually it is in the chest, but it can also be in the shoulders, neck, jaw, back, or arms. It can mimic indigestion. Those who are at risk for heart attack need to be extra careful if they believe they are suffering from indigestion or an upset stomach. These symptoms of angina are classic examples of what heart disease is and how it can feel. Those who have angina are more likely to have a heart attack.

Heart attacks are another byproduct of coronary artery disease. They happen when an artery is entirely or almost completely blocked and the heart is lacking sufficient blood for more than twenty minutes.

Heart Failure – Another Form Of What Heart Disease Is

If the heart can’t pump the blood around the body as well as it needs to, there can be heart failure. It isn’t that the heart has totally quit working – a common misconception – but it is that because the blood isn’t being transferred as it should be, other organs don’t get enough blood. Some symptoms include swelling in feet, legs, and ankles, shortness of breath, and extreme fatigue. If you have these symptoms, check with your doctor right away.

The Most Common Types Of Heart Disease

Posted by admin | Health | Wednesday 14 July 2010 4:46 pm

This article is written to take some of the mystery (and hopefully, some of the fear) from the words, “heart disease.”

Although there are many different types of heart disease when someone mentions the words “heart disease” most people think of coronary heart disease first. Coronary heart disease is a “narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart” however it is important to stress that coronary heart disease is only one form of heart disease.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common types of heart disease. In fact, it is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Heart disease affects both the structure of the heart and the functioning of it or sometimes both. A number of conditions fall under the category of heart disease and these include coronary heart disease (which takes into account heart attacks), heart failure, heart valve disease, abnormal heart rhythms (or arrhythmias), congenital heart disease, pericardial disease, aorta disease and Marfan syndrome, heart muscle disease (or cardiomyopathy), and vascular disease (blood vessel disease).

Coronary artery disease (or abbreviated to CAD) is another name for atherosclerosis or simply hardening of the arteries. It is the arteries that make it possible for nutrients and oxygen to make it to the heart. This is also one of the more common types of heart disease.

The average heart beats 60 to 100 times per minute in a steady even manner. This works out to be approximately 100,000 each and every day. However for reasons unknown to the medical community, sometimes the heart falls out of rhythm. This leads to an abnormal heartbeat or an irregular heartbeat, which is known as arrhythmia. Also known as a dysrhythmia, in this cause a change takes place to the rhythm of the heart, which can lead to a heartbeat that is too fast, too slow or uneven in how it beats. This is one of the more unusual types of heart disease.

The term “heart failure” is somewhat misleading. Heart failure does not mean that the heart has failed or that it has ceased to work properly. Instead it means that the pumping action of the heart is not as good as it should be. Heart failure affects an average of five million Americans every year and is the number one cause of hospitalization for individuals over the age of 65.

The heart has four chambers and heart valves lie at the exit of each one and allow one-way blood flow to make its way through the heart. Heart valve disease takes place when there is a problem with any one of these heart valves. Some examples of heart valve disease include aortic stenosis, mitral valve insufficiency and mitral valve prolapse.

Congenital heart disease is a problem that occurs before a baby is born and is a defect in the way the heart is structured or else in the structure of the blood vessels. Congenital heart disease sometimes does not show itself until a person is a child and in some cases, until they become an adult. Congenital heart defects affect an average of 8 out of every 1,000 babies born on an annual basis.

Cardiomyopathies are diseases that occur to affect the muscle of the heart. Generally this includes heart muscles that are enlarged or else have become stiff or thickened over a period of time. Heart muscle disease makes it difficult for the heart to adequately pump blood. If it is left untreated, a cardiomyopathy will get worse as time progresses and can very often lead to both heart failure as well as abnormal heart rhythms.

Pericarditis is a condition that involves the lining of the heart becoming inflamed. This is one of the more unusual types of heart disease. This condition is actually rather rare and is most often caused by one type of infection or another.

The aorta is the biggest artery in the heart and a number of conditions can cause it to either tear or to widen (or dilate). Thee include the genetic condition known as Marfan Syndrome, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, connective tissue disorders and injury. This is one of the types of heart disease that is somewhat rare.

The Heart in Bible Versus Quran

Posted by admin | Health | Monday 12 July 2010 4:48 pm

Before dealing with the topic of the heart in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is essential to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while total words in the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible is more than 10 times the Quran word-wise. In other words, the Bible has the potential of more than 10 times than the Quran to exhibit its topics.

Back to the heart, it is mentioned 884 times in the Bible and 115 times in the Quran.

It needs a big textbook to interpret all the verses that talk about the heart in both books. The verses shown here are those related to sciences.

The Heart in the Bible:

The verses are given without interpretation. The smart reader can interpret these Biblical verses according to his knowledge to see himself if they agree or contradict with the sciences.

Joshua 7:5

And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

1 Samuel 25:37

But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

Job 41:24

His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.

Psalm 55:21

The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

Proverbs 7:3

Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

Proverbs 13:12

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Proverbs 14:13

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.

Proverbs 14:30

A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

Proverbs 15:30

The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.

Proverbs 17:22

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Proverbs 27:9

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

Ecclesiastes 10:2

A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.

Lamentations 2:19

Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the LORD: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.

Ezekiel 11:19

And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

Ezekiel 16:30

How weak is thine heart, saith the LORD GOD, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an imperious whorish woman;

Ezekiel 36:26

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Zechariah 7:12

Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.

Matthew 12:34

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Acts 14:17

Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

The heart in the Quran:

[Surah 33:4]

“Allah has not made for any man two hearts in his (one) body:”

This verse is certainly a scientific miracle. We have never ever heard that any man has two hearts in his body.

This verse is never found in the Bible.

[Surah 22:46]

“Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.”

This verse is an invitation for traveling to learn the wisdom.

Everyone knows the importance of traveling and exchange the knowledge between people and nations.

This verse is never found in the Bible.

Now, one may realize the big difference between the Bible and the Quran.

Herein, we have an invitation to read carefully the Quran and to understand it.

[Surah 47:24]

“Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Quran, or are their hearts locked up by them?”

It is unfair that the intellectual smart people pre-judge the Quran and depend on what the biased media say about it. It is shameful for anyone to lock up his heart.

With all the love and respect, the Quran invites the mankind to:

[Surah 18:29]

“Say, “The Truth is from your Lord”: Let him who will, believe, and let him who will, reject (it): for the wrong-doers We have prepared a Fire whose (smoke and flames), like the wall and roof of a tent, will hem them in: if they implore relief they will be granted water like melted brass, that will scald their faces: How dreadful the drink! How uncomfortable a couch to recline on!”

The Day of Judgment is true, but what about the hearts in that day?

Surah79 (6-12) gives us an idea about that:

[6] One day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion.

[7] Followed by oft-repeated (commotions):

[8] Hearts that Day will be in agitation;

[9] Cast down will be (their owners’) eyes.

[10] They say (now): “What! Shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state?

[11] “What! When we shall Have become rotten bones?”

[12] They say: “It would, in that case, be a return with loss!”

Back to our main issue; one may ask this: Is the Quran quoted from the Bible? And which book precedes the sciences? The Bible which talks about the melted heart, the stony heart, the war inside the heart, the table of the heart, the wise right heart, the fool left heart, the food (not blood) inside the heart etc…. or the Quran which gives us a miraculous scientific statement about the heart?

Congestive Heart Disease Information

Posted by admin | Health | Saturday 10 July 2010 4:45 pm

Congestive heart disease is a physical disorder in which the heart no longer pumps hard enough. Since the heart pumps weakly, blood can back up into the lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and extremities.

Congestive heart disease is also called congestive heart failure (CHF), cardiac failure, or heart failure. These names can be misleading, since they seem to indicate that the heart has totally failed and that death is imminent. This is not the case. Congestive heart disease is nearly always a chronic, long-term condition, although it does sometimes develop suddenly.

How Common Is Congestive Heart Disease?

Of 100 people between the ages of 27 and 74, approximately 2 have congestive heart disease. That means about 6 million people in the U.S. are affected by the disease. After age 74, congestive heart disease becomes more common. It is said to be the leading cause of hospitalization among senior citizens.

Causes of Congestive Heart Disease

Congestive heart disease has many causes. They include, but are not limited to, the following causes:

* Weakening of the heart muscle due to viral infections. The weakness may also be caused by toxins such as alcohol abuse.
* Weakening of the heart muscle by coronary artery disease that has led to heart attacks.
* Weakening of the heart muscle by heart valve disease that involves large amounts of blood leakage.
* Heart muscle stiffness caused by a blocked heart valve.
* Uncontrolled high blood pressure, also called hypertension.
* High levels of the thyroid hormone.
* Excessive use of amphetamines (“speed”).

Symptoms of Congestive Heart Disease

Either side of the heart muscle may weaken and cause congestive heart disease. The symptoms of congestive heart disease depend on the side of the heart that is affected. They can include these:

* asthma that can be attributed to the heart
* blood pooling in the body’s overall circulation
* blood pooling in the liver’s circulation
* enlargement of the heart
* shortness of breath
* skin color that appears bluish or dusky
* swelling of the body, especially the extremities

Congestive Heart Disease Risk Factors

As is true with most heart disease, family history is a major risk factor for congestive heart disease. Genetics cannot easily be altered. Age is a second risk factor that cannot be changed. Congestive heart disease is particularly prevalent among older people.

Aside from those two, however, risk factors can and should be addressed. Here are 7 risk factors for congestive heart disease that you may want to discuss with your health care provider.

1. High blood pressure: This is the highest risk factor for congestive heart disease! Men with uncontrolled high blood pressure are twice as likely as those with normal blood pressure to suffer congestive heart disease. If a woman has uncontrolled high blood pressure, she is three times as likely as women with normal blood pressure to develop congestive heart disease.

2. Heart Attacks: This is the second highest risk factor for congestive heart disease. Those who have had heart attacks that resulted in damage to the heart muscle, and scarring of the muscle tissue, have increased risks of experiencing congestive heart disease.

3. High Cholesterol: Showing high levels of cholesterol, particularly when levels of HDL are low, is listed as another risk factor for congestive heart disease.

4. Diabetes: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are risk factors for developing congestive heart disease.

5. Obesity: Men and women who are overweight unnecessarily increase their risks of experiencing congestive heart disease. The heart must work harder when the body is not at a healthy weight, and can begin to lose its ability to deliver blood efficiently.

6. Prolonged Physical Inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle, with little exercise, puts people at risk for congestive heart disease, especially as they increase in age. The heart needs cardiovascular exercise to remain strong and able to function well.

7. Smoking: Smoking increases the heart’s workload. It also affects the lungs. This is a risk for congestive heart disease that anyone can eliminate.

CAUTION: Please see your doctor if you have reason to think you may have one or more of the risk factors or symptoms of congestive heart disease. The information contained in this article is for educational purposes only.

Heart Failure – Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Heart failure also called is congestive heart failure. Heart failure becomes more common with advancing age. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood throughout the body. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood throughout the body. Heart failure develops over time as the pumping action of the heart grows weaker. Heart failure is a serious condition. It contributes to or causes about 300,000 deaths each year. About 5 million people in the U.S. have heart failure. It contributes to 300,000 deaths each year. It can affect the left side, the right side, or both sides of the heart. Most cases involve the left side where the heart can’t pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. The most common causes of heart failure are hypertension (high blood pressure) and coronary artery disease (for example, you have had a heart attack). Arterial plaque lines the inside of the arteries that supply the heart and the rest of the body, meaning less blood gets to the heart itself, as well as the heart having to work harder to push blood through the thinner systemic arteries.

Heart failure may result from disorders that cause the heart’s walls to stiffen, such as infiltrations and infections. Heart failure due to systolic dysfunction usually develops because the heart cannot contract normally. Heart failure has two main forms: systolic dysfunction (which is more common) and diastolic dysfunction. In systolic dysfunction, the heart contracts less forcefully and cannot pump out as much of the blood that is returned to it as it normally does. Heart valve disorders—narrowing (stenosis) of a valve, which hinders blood flow through the heart, or leakage of blood backward (regurgitation) through a valve—can cause heart failure. Some heart valve disorders, such as aortic valve stenosis, hinder blood flow out of the heart. Other causes may include diseases of the heart valves and weakened heart muscle due to viral infections or their poisonous products (called toxins). Individuals with heart failure are sensitive to small shifts in their intravascular volume status (the amount of fluid in their circulatory system). Often left heart failure leads to right heart failure and then both sides are affected.

Left-sided heart failure leads to fluid accumulation in the lungs, which causes shortness of breath. Heart failure is a major cause of sudden death due to production of arrhythmias. Persons with diabetes have a much greater risk of developing heart failure than those without because diabetes is associated with other heart failure risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity and high cholesterol levels. Weight reduction – through physical activity and dietary modification, as obesity is a risk factor for heart failure and ventricular hypertrophy. Fluid restriction – patients with CHF have a diminished ability to excrete free water load. Sodium restriction – excessive sodium intake may precipitate or exacerbate heart failure. Moderate physical activity, when symptoms are mild or moderate; or bed rest when symptoms are severe. Another current treatment involves the use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Smoking and drinking alcohol can worsen heart failure and should be stopped. Exercise, weight loss, and stopping smoking help reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, as do good control of diabetes and lowering of cholesterol levels.

Treatment for Heart Failure Tips

1. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors drugs help people with heart failure live longer and feel better.

2. Diuretics are often called “water pills” because they make you urinate more often and help keep fluid from building up in your body.

3. Diuretics, or water tablets, which work on the kidneys to remove the extra fluid and salt from the body and lower blood pressure.

4. ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors, which lower blood pressure and help the heart to pump more easily.

5. Digoxin helps the heart by making it beat more strongly and pump more blood.

6. Nitrates help with shortness of breath because they reduce the blood pressure in the lungs by widening (dilating) blood vessels and allow the heart to work more efficiently.

7.Warfarin stops blood clots from forming and Aspirin also stops blood clots from forming

An Introduction to Heart Rhythm Meditation and Heart Rate Variability

Posted by admin | Health | Friday 2 July 2010 4:45 pm

Heart Rhythm Meditation is a powerful form of meditation that centers on the heart. It strengthens the physical heart while it opens the emotional and energetic heart.

In our new book, Energize Your Heart we speak of the heart having four dimensions: the vertical dimension, including both height and depth, the horizontal dimension, the forward dimension, and the inner dimension. Each dimension of the heart is different, and our heart longs to develop in all dimensions.

The height of the heart gives a sense of hope, optimism, idealism, and the courage to dream, to hold impossibly high standards. When this is lacking, the heart is crushed with disappointment and regret. The depth of the heart is where all emotions are felt, connecting each of us to all other beings and allowing us to feel love, joy, sorrow, and all other emotions. Without this the heart is shallow, unable to connect or empathize with others, and unaware of the richness of feeling.

The width of the heart gives one tolerance, the ability to be with all people in harmony, to bring together disparate views and influences into a coherent whole. Without the ‘broadhearted’ quality, one becomes narrow and isolated.

The forward dimension of the heart gives us the courage to move toward our goals, the desires of our hearts. Without this, the heart becomes blocked with frustration, the dreams of the heart only dimly remembered.

Finally, the inner dimension holds all other dimensions in their potential, representing the capacity for change and the ability to hold emotion. The inner dimension gives the sense of peace and inner stillness. Without it one becomes exhausted by life’s demands. This article shows that this understanding of the heart is not just metaphorical; the dimensions can be measured by an instrument and seen in the beat of your physical heart.

The heart organ is connected through the nervous system directly to other major organs and is able to sense their need. The heart also responds to adrenaline in the blood flowing through it. With these inputs the heart is able to adjust its rate to accommodate the needs of the whole body. By its heartbeat, it is able to broadcast a common signal to every cell.

The heart coordinates the entire organism and thus also gives us a model for heart-centered leadership: listen to everyone, and whatever you say, say it to everyone. The heart has no secrets; it includes others and loves to be self-revealing. It’s the mind that calculates, “What can I say to whom, for what effect?” The heart absorbs the emotions of many and its own emotions are continually broadcast to all, so secrecy is futile.

Because the heart is continually adjusting its heart rate, the heartbeat is not a constant signal. Internal and external stimuli, including thoughts, emotional reactions, and changes in your environment trigger immediate changes in heart rate so that a beat will come slightly early or late; this creates heart rate variability (HRV), a part of normal cardiac function.

In a non-meditative state, there is no discernible pattern to the heart rate variability. If charted on a graph, the pattern of the heart rate would appear chaotic, with several jagged peaks (find more detailed information at appliedmeditation.org).

In Heart Rhythm Meditation, the pattern becomes a smooth sinusoidal curve. The heart rate enters into a state of harmony with the breath rate called entrainment. During entrainment the peak of each inhalation occurs precisely at the lowest point in heart rate – the bottom of the heart rate curve. This is the opposite of the pattern that typically exists, which is taught in medical schools, which is that the inhalation tends to be correlated to some extent with a faster heart rate (though obviously other factors normally intrude to make the HRV pattern chaotic). As far as we know, this effect hasn’t yet been studied; it’s certainly not commonly known, even in cardiology. The effects of conscious breath are not much recognized medically at this time.

Your heart rate pattern is determined entirely by the breath pattern. You cannot control your heart rate directly, but by controlling your breath, which you can do, you cause your heart rate to follow the pattern of your breath. This ability to indirectly control your heart rate is essential to energizing your heart and applying the power of your heart to your life. This effect is so strong, that we’ve observed that heart arrhythmia disappears during Heart Rhythm Meditation.

How To Live With Heart Disease

Posted by admin | Health | Wednesday 30 June 2010 4:45 pm

The agony of finding out that you may be suffering from some form of heart disease is usually traumatic. Your doctor has just received the laboratory test results for the battery of tests that you have completed during your recent checkup. From what the results indicate, if you do not stop eating all those fatty foods that you love so much, you are going to require bypass surgery very soon. Do not worry that your quality of life will get worse since there are modern treatment plans that get you on to the road of recovery as long as certain lifestyle changes are made.

Living With Heart Disease

The first consideration when living with heart disease is the type of heart problem you are suffering from. Is your doctor tracking your cholesterol levels? Or, is it something a lot more serious? The severity of your heart condition will shed a great deal of light on the kind of lifestyle you can have when living with heart diseases and how it actually affects you.

If the type of heart problem is currently a very mild form, you should be able to keep a lid on it with medication. But for many people in a state of denial, they will refuse to or do not like taking their medication since they would be admitting to the fact that they are living with the disease.

So if you have heart medication to take for your condition and you are too stubborn to take it, understand the consequences of this action. Is it better to take a couple of pills on a daily basis or would you prefer to have to go to the extent of requiring heart surgery? Surely no one wants to undergo heart surgery. So think carefully before rejecting medication. It is a lot easier to deal with than other more complicated treatment methods.

Getting adequate amount of exercise on a regular basis is another facet of living with heart problem. If the heart problem in your case is of the more serious kind, you may not want to overtax yourself. If you sit still all day long you have a higher risk of getting blood clots. So get off your butt and get some exercise. Start with brisk walking over short distances and gradually build up.

There are some more difficult aspects to living with heart disease. One of them is giving up delicious fatty food and desserts. But then again it all boils down to whether or not you would like to prolong your life. There are trade offs in all situations. Nowadays there are so many more options though. Just a few years ago we could not obtain half the low fat option foods that are available today. Not only are they delicious, they are also healthier options.

Your doctor will be able to provide you with information about heart diseases and the Internet has many reputable websites. Some of the heart health websites host forums where you can communicate with other people suffering from the same disease.

Living with heart disease is really just about taking your prescribed medication, ensuring that you eat in a healthy manner and remaining active. With research you will find all the information you ever need to know to manage your condition better.

The Progress Of Heart Disease Research

Due to the debilitating effects of various forms of heart disease, medical technologists around the world are working towards developing more effective treatment methods through heart disease research. The search for knowledge about what heart disease really is and the pursuit of solutions to use to prevent and treat heart disease is extremely vital. There are many companies and organizations that either conduct heart disease research, or support the cause for heart disease research.

Heart Disease Research Organizations

The Research Center for Stroke and Heart Disease is a non-profit organization established to raise awareness of and find solutions for prevention of stroke and heart disease. Its reach is worldwide and it concerns itself with all types of heart disease and stroke. The Research Center for Stroke and Heart Disease designs, implements and evaluates projects that educate people with regards to the risk factors for these illnesses and motivates them to practice good habits in the quest for reducing them.

The Research Center for Stroke and Heart Disease operates from Buffalo General Hospital. There are several full-time and part-time staff members and they make use of contractors who have a background in communications, health care management and computer programming for heart disease research. During the past ten years of their existence the Research Center for Stroke and Heart Disease has built a very good reputation.

Another heart disease research organization is the British Heart Foundation. This organization is considered to be the British nation’s heart charity. The British Heart Foundation focuses in particular on three very important issues. They invest in pioneering heart disease research, support and care for heart patients and they provide essential information to assist people to reduce their risk of premature death from heart or circulatory related disease.

Harvard Medical School should also be mentioned. It is a center that concentrates its efforts on heart disease research. Harvard Medical School has been in the heart disease research arena for several decades. They have a vast amount to offer in terms of information and education regarding heart disease: what it is, what its causes are, up-to-date research findings and many statistics.

Research into heart diseases is the only solution that will help to clarify heart related diseases throughout the world today. There is always hope that sometime, preferably in the near future, research will show the way to completely avoid heart related diseases for everyone.

Heart Disease – Know About Symptoms and Heart Care

Posted by admin | Health | Monday 28 June 2010 4:45 pm

Your heart, other than your brain, is the center of many body processes especially that it pumps the river of your life, your blood. When not taken care properly, you may contact or acquire a heart disease that could be a threat to your life.

What is heart disease?

Heart disease , also known as cardiovascular disease, is an umbrella term used to describe other ailments that affect the busiest muscle in the body, the heart. Mainly, it affects older people and is hereditary in nature. Heart diseases have become one of the major causes of deaths all over the world. Many of the variants of the disease are considered as “silent killers because they show no visible symptoms especially those that are affected with high blood pressure.

Heart disease s are closely associated with blood pressure, cholesterol, hardening of the arteries, heart attacks and strokes. The disease occurs when the heart and vessels of the blood are not working properly or are malfunctioning because of other factors like too much cholesterol, fatigue and improper diets.

Other Problems Related to Heart Disease

Many of the problems that go along with heart disease have to do with the arteries. Arteries are not the same with veins. They are muscular blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Arteriosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries is one of the complications of heart disease. The arteries become thick and no longer flexible that the blood could not flow smoothly.

Another problem is atherosclerosis. This occurs when there are plaque deposits caused by the buildup of cholesterol and far in the arteries. In turn, the arteries become narrow and the blood can not flow through. When the heart could not get enough blood to pump, a person is suffering from angina and could feel chest pain.

Two of the most deadly complication is heart attack and stroke. These two happens when the heart malfunctions. There is heart attack when a blood clots in the part of the heart. On the other hand, stroke happens when the brain is not able to get enough blood due to the clotting of blood or bursting of blood vessel.

Acquiring Heart Disease

Unlike diseases that are caused by virus or bacteria, heart disease is not contagious. Rather, there are risk factors that increase the chances of a person to acquire heart disease. One of these factors is old age. When people get older, the functioning of the heart could not be as healthy as it uses to be while we are young. The heart also deteriorates especially because of unhealthy lifestyle. As earlier said, heart disease is also hereditary. When you have family members who had the same problems, most likely you could also acquire the same.

However, some risk factors of heart disease are controllable. Among these factors are smoking, having high blood pressure, being overweight, and not exercising. These entire factors, if not monitored can contribute to having a heart disease.

Signs of Heart Disease

Heart disease s do not actually give visible symptoms or signs to people suffering it. Most of the time the disease is detected when the patient is already feeling chest pain or already had a heart attack of stroke.

To determine whether a person has a heart disease, one or a couple of the following procedure is initiated. Electrocardiogram records the electric activity of the heart. Through this test, the heart beating is determined when it is normal or not. Echocardiogram, on the other hand, uses sound waves that bounced off the parts of the heart. These waves create a picture of the heart, which is displayed in the monitor. With the stress test, some cables are connected to the body and to the electrocardiogram machine. The heart activity and how the muscles react while the patient exercise is being monitored. Catheterization locates the narrowed arteries through a long and thin tube that is inserted inside the body. This tube emits a special dye. Last is the carotid artery scan, which also uses sound waves to locate blockage in the carotid artery.
